How do you solve a problem like Sy-ri-a?

How do you solve a problem like Sy-ri-a?

I agree with Bret Stephens: Target Assad. Worth a read.

Bret's views are expanded in this interview with Hugh Hewitt. Extract:
We have a strategic interest in punishing people who use chemical weapons. We have a strategic interest in maintaining the credibility of an American president’s word. We have a strategic interest in making sure that the Syrian civil war does not become a regional civil war. And above all, we have a strategic interest in putting Hezbollah and its masters in Tehran on the back foot....
Final point, Hugh, don’t think that Israelis aren’t looking very carefully at the way the President acts toward Syria in determining whether he’s going to act in any significant way toward Israel, because he’s already demonstrated that his red lines are effectively meaningless. And we will face a real and genuinely worrisome foreign policy challenge if Israel feels it has to go it alone against Iran and their nuclear program.
Have a good Labor Day Week-end.

Justice For "Shorty"

Police in Washington state are searching for two young suspects who beat a World War II veteran to death in a parking lot Wednesday night.
The Spokane Police Department says in a press release officers responded to reports of an assault and found the victim in his car with serious head injuries. He later died in the hospital.
Meanwhile, 'Law & Order SVU' is keeping the Trayvon-inspired race-baiting alive.

I agree with Pat Buchanan's take on the issue: collapse of moral teaching, single-parenting with absent fathers, black culture, etc.
If we go back to the end of World War II, 90 percent of black families consisted of a mother and father and children raised and disciplined by their parents. The churches to which these families went on Sundays were stronger. Black schools may have been largely segregated, but they were also the transmission belts of patriotism and traditional values rooted in biblical truths and a Christian faith.
Though such schools graduated hardworking, law-abiding and productive citizens, today they would be closed as unconstitutional.
Indeed, all of those character- and conscience-forming institutions of yesterday are in an advanced state of decline today.
Seventy-three percent of black kids are born to single moms. Black kids who make it to 12th grade may often be found reading at seventh-, eighth- or ninth-grade levels. In some cities the black dropout rate can hit as high as 50 percent.
Drugs are readily available. And among black males ages 18 to 29, in urban areas, often a third are in prison or jail, or on probation or parole, or walking around with a criminal record.
Liberals are black Americans' worst enemies.

And that's the way the Ball bounces.
