Can Man Be Good Without God?

A good article about the now-seasonal atheist propaganda onslaught about being good without God.
In our culture, even the most passionate atheist cannot help having been influenced by the Judeo-Christian worldview that shaped Western civilization. “We know that you can be good without God,’’ Speckhardt tells CNN.
He can be confident of that only because he lives in a society so steeped in Judeo-Christian values that he takes those values for granted. But a society bereft of that religious heritage is one not even Speckhardt would want to live in.
From Townhall's Jeff Jacoby.

Would western atheists really want to live in a godless society? You don't see many of them clamouring to live in North Korea or China, with its forced abortions and harvesting of body parts from prisoners.

Yep. They run on the fumes of Christianity and don't even realize it.

Yep. Borrowed capital.

One of the Foundational underpinning of Western Society comes from Jesus' words "There is no one good but God" which is echoed by St Paul "For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God". Without that understanding human society rapidly becomes a 'survival of the fittest' hell that sucks the life out of one and all by removing all constraints on individuals. Unfortunately the modern atheist, progressives, Muslims all believe in the fundamental goodness of mankind and the results are everywhere to be seen.

Without an enduring moral order, what standard can 'goodness' be determined by?

So "goodness" didn't exist before Christianity? Or can I assume that goodness is as much a characteristic of Pagan gods as it is with Christian Gods?

Johndoe124.

No.

Goodness has always existed because God has always existed. There would be good whether Christianity existed or not. There was good prior to Christianity.

The argument is that goodness -- there being good and people expressing it, is an impossibility and absurdity without a moral source for goodness. A dead, unthinking, unfeeling, insentient, atheistic universe does not cough up goodness. It becomes, at best, a fiction created by human beings.

Joe - Jesus was right when he said that "no one is [truly] good but God".

"... nothing intellectually compelling or challenging.. bald assertions coupled to superstition... woefully pathetic"
