The USA's Green Pork

The western front of the United States Capitol...Image via Wikipedia
Conservatism stresses individual responsibility -- which includes not over-spending, honesty, and belt-tightening when necessary. It is the opposite of an entitlement (as in, "I'm entitled to your money regardless of the costs or consequences") mentality.

The USA's federal government has seemingly lost all economic moral and ethical sense. A nation ruled by liberal fantasies regarding the creation and preservation of wealth is a nation doomed.

The USA is losing the virtues that made it a great nation.

Michelle Malkin weighs in on the USA's Green Pork.

US Taxpayers On Hook To AutoMakers For Billions

President Barack ObamaImage by Chrysler-Group via Flickr
The Obama bailout of the auto industry was a gift to Big Unions at the expense of shareholders (who lost everything and got nothing) and the US tax-payer.

This article puts the cost at 14 billion.

Rich Lowry at National Review also weighs in.

Mark Steyn on Obama: Shriveled Peas and Demonizable Irrelevancies

America AloneImage by Double_Nickel via Flickr
"America's debt is an existential crisis, and playing shell games with shriveled peas of demonizable irrelevancies only advertises your contempt for the citizenry." -- Mark Steyn, here.

Iconic Hillary Photo Goes Down In Allergy Flames

BEIJING - NOVEMBER 17: U.S. President Barack ...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Well, I thought Hillary's pensive, perplexive pose was the best part of the Obama's-in-the-kitchen-with-Osama photo. I loved the tentativeness of it, the tenterhooks of it; it had it all -- the anticipation, the anxiety, the angst, the anguish... well, you get the idea.

Then, Hillary has to go and ruin my iconic-photo moment by saying it was her allergies talking.

The other thing about the photo is I'm pretty sure military guy is playing Pong or something.

Click her for a link to the photo.

Quote of the Day: Mark Steyn: "The People Who Have The Problem Are The American Liberals..."

Dick Cheney, Vice President of the United States.Image via Wikipedia
"The people who have the problem here are the American liberals who thought that Bush and Cheney were war criminals for what they did, but hail Obama’s targeted assassination as, you know, a sophisticated use of smart power." - Mark Steyn, on The Hugh Hewitt Show.
Speaking of Cheney, I attended one of his rallies in northern California years back. Smart guy. I liked him, and still do. What's an American campaign rally like? It's like a Canadian rally, on steroids.

Kudos To Obama...

WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 1: In this handout image...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Kudos To Obama for deciding not to publish the death-photos of Osama Bin Laden.  I think he made a good call on this one. The Muslim world would only profess outrage (while at the same time denying the photos' authenticity) -- it would be lose-lose for the West.

On another front,  Obama's rush to ground zero strikes me as political opportunism and a bit unseemly.

More dignified to be presidential and remain in the White House.

How Bad Is The US Deficit?

Seal of the United States Department of the Tr...                                      Image via Wikipedia
How bad is the US deficit?

Bad.

Consider:
Under the Obama tax plan, the Bush rates would be repealed for the top brackets. Yet the "cost" of extending all the Bush rates in 2011 over 10 years was about $3.7 trillion. Some $3 trillion of that was for everything but the top brackets—and Mr. Obama says he wants to extend those rates forever. According to Internal Revenue Service data, the entire taxable income of everyone earning over $100,000 in 2008 was about $1.582 trillion. Even if all these Americans—most of whom are far from wealthy—were taxed at 100%, it wouldn't cover Mr. Obama's deficit for this year.
Note that's just this year's deficit -- it doesn't even begin to address the mountain of accumulated debt. The WSJ article concludes:
Mr. Obama ludicrously claimed that Mr. Ryan favors "a fundamentally different America than the one we've known throughout most of our history." Nothing is likelier to bring that future about than the President's political indifference in the midst of a fiscal crisis.
And the band played on.

Obama Says Corporate Profits "Have To Be Shared By American Workers" -- What About Losses?

DETROIT - SEPTEMBER 1: Democratic presidentia...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Obama: Corporate Profits "Have To Be Shared By American Workers".

Don't American workers already automatically benefit by working for profitable, successful American companies? Don't more workers usually get hired -- the greatest of all possible benefits for an out-of-work worker -- and don't the productive workers who are already there have increased job security -- a benefit if ever there was one -- along with the possibility of pay increases and likelihood of increased job opportunities?  I mean, doesn't this already happen without the chiding of a President?

Or is Obama just playing to the Marxist crowd?

But, let's play along with this idea.  If corporate profits must be shared by American workers, what about losses?  In bad years, should corporations get to send their workers a bill to help make up for the losses?

Was this the attitude of the Ontario UAW when the auto industry hit its slump?  Wasn't it more like, "when profits are up, we deserve our fair share", but, "when profits are down, it's not our fault and not our problem".

Wasn't that in effect what the UAW reps said?

The recent episode where Obama denied the moral and legal rights of GM shareholders in favour of bestowing uncalled for if not illegal financial benefits on unionized workers was an appalling, appalling example of politically-motivated opportunistic favouritism.  The shareholders and the small feeder companies got wrecked while the big unionized workers got lucky.

And this Obama favouritism thing -- which seems to be the cynically defining characteristic of his presidency -- seems to have no sign of ending anytime soon.

I hope this man turns things around and has a good final two years; but, so far, I don't see it happening.

Obama Jumps The Shark?

In his continued efforts to thumb the Presidential nose at traditional American assumptions -- the assumption of American exceptionalism, the assumption of America's role as world leader, the assumption of the basic goodness of America, and the assumption that America has a special relationship with its Anglophile cousins, i.e., the UK, Canada, and Australia, U.S. President Barack Obama has announced that America's biggest ally is, wait for this,... France.

To which I say:

1. If the U.S. has no bigger or better ally than France, then America is, in effect, on its own.

2. In doing this, Obama has jumped the shark as a credible U.S. leader.

Am I right? Is this a shark-jump moment? Is this the moment -- or do you think Obama had already jumped the shark?

For me, this is it. His contempt for traditional American values, and traditional American allies, is palpable.

The Ball Bounces is declaring it: Obama has jumped the shark.

Obama: Unions 2, Investors 0

United Auto Workers            Image via Wikipedia
Thanks to a generous share of GM stock obtained in the company's 2009 bankruptcy settlement, the United Auto Workers is well on its way to recouping the billions of dollars GM owed it — putting it far ahead of taxpayers who have recouped only about 30 percent of their investment and further still ahead of investors in the old GM who have received nothing.
The boon for the union fits the pattern established when the White House pushed GM into bankruptcy and steered it through the courts in a way that consistently put the interests of the union ahead of many suppliers, dealers and investors — stakeholders that ordinarily would have fared as well or better under the bankruptcy laws.
Obama: not a Messiah, not even a great or good leader -- just another unprincipled politician paying off his support base at the expense of justice to ordinary citizens who invested their hard-earned money in GM shares.

10. Obama doesn’t believe in American greatness

9. President Obama is muddled and confused on national security

8. US foreign policy is an embarrassing mess under the Obama administration

7. Obama’s handling of the Gulf oil spill has been weak-kneed and indecisive

6. Obama’s support for socialised health care is a huge political mistake

5. Obama’s Big Government message is falling flat

4. The United States is drowning in debt

3. Obama fails to inspire

2. Most Americans don’t have confidence in the president’s leadership

1. The Obama presidency is out of touch with the American people.

A pretty spot-on list from the once-fawning UK press.   I give the list a solid 8/10.

John, Paul, George (Bush), and Ringo

Photograph of Paul McCartney as The Beatles ar...                               Image via Wikipedia
"After the last eight years, it's great to have a President who knows what a library is".

Ouch! Ouch!!!

Paul, Paul, Paul. All you need is love, man. You know, "love, love, love"?

Try to see it my way, do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on?
While you see it your way, run the risk that all that "love" may soon be gone.

We can work it out, we can work it out.

Think of what you're saying, "Bush was dumb" and still you think that it's all right.
Think of what I'm saying, we can work it out and get it straight, or say good night.

We can work it out, We can work it out.

Life is very short, and there's no time for dissing and fighting, my friend.
I have always thought that it's a crime, So I will ask you once again.

Try to see it my way, only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong.
While you see it your way, there's a chance that love might fall apart before too long.

We can work it out, We can work it out.

All ya need is love, man.

Coo-coo-ka-choo!

“Like millions of other Americans, I have always had a good impression of Paul McCartney and thought of him as a classy guy, but I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of grace and respect he displayed at the White House,” ....

... having earned no university degrees of his own, the Beatle may not know W. was the first American president to earn a master’s degree in business administration. (The fact the MBA is from Harvard really irks the left.) Not to mention Bush is married to a librarian."

(He also didn't know the difference between Newfoundland and PEI when he came to work things out with the seals -- perhaps he should have married a librarian!)
