Ball Bounces Poll: Obama's Campaign Slogan: "Forward."

What do you think of Prez. Obama's 2012 campaign slogan: "Forward."? Is the US currently headed in the right direction to be moving "forward"? Or does forward simply mean, "into the future"?  As in, "the past lies behind us, the future lies ahead!!!".  Or does it have the desperate whiff of a communist Russia slogan, as in "last year was dreadful, let's not even think about it -- let's get outta here"?!

(And what's with the period? When you say Forward, shouldn't there be a bit of oomph to it, as in Forward march!!! I mean, is the US government not only out of money but out of exclamation marks as well??!!

Here, I'll donate one of mine -- ! -- take it.

Or is the slogan really "Forward - Full Stop", in which case, isn't it kind of lurchy?

Your vote counts at the Ball Bounces -- even if you're illegal!, even if you're white!, even if you're (gasp) Canadian !!!!

Vote now and vote often!

Forward!

The USA's Green Pork

The western front of the United States Capitol...Image via Wikipedia
Conservatism stresses individual responsibility -- which includes not over-spending, honesty, and belt-tightening when necessary. It is the opposite of an entitlement (as in, "I'm entitled to your money regardless of the costs or consequences") mentality.

The USA's federal government has seemingly lost all economic moral and ethical sense. A nation ruled by liberal fantasies regarding the creation and preservation of wealth is a nation doomed.

The USA is losing the virtues that made it a great nation.

Michelle Malkin weighs in on the USA's Green Pork.

Richard Bove's US Market Commentary on BNN.

"You can't use debt to solve a problem with debt".

"You can't solve a debt problem by printing money".

"It's not our grandchildren's problem; it's our problem".

"You can't kick the problem down the road because there is no more road".

Well worth a listen.

US Taxpayers On Hook To AutoMakers For Billions

President Barack ObamaImage by Chrysler-Group via Flickr
The Obama bailout of the auto industry was a gift to Big Unions at the expense of shareholders (who lost everything and got nothing) and the US tax-payer.

This article puts the cost at 14 billion.

Poverty In America: Two TVs, One Xbox, etc. etc.

This is a picture of an XBOX.                              Image via Wikipedia
Data from the Department of Energy and other agencies show that the average poor family, as defined by Census officials:
● Lives in a home that is in good repair, not crowded, and equipped with air conditioning, clothes washer and dryer, and cable or satellite TV service.
● Prepares meals in a kitchen with a refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave as well as oven and stove.
● Enjoys two color TVs, a DVD player, VCR and — if children are there — an Xbox, PlayStation, or other video game system.
Had enough money in the past year to meet essential needs, including adequate food and medical care.
No mention of "savings". My African friends would be astonished to learn that their highest economic aspirations would make them poor according to American standards. I remember some guy once said that anyone who has two pairs of shoes is not poor. One pair, or no pair -- that's poor.

Cable TV? Not poor.

And that's the way the Ball bounces.

Equality "Harms Minorities And Is Unconstitutional"

City seal of Detroit, Michigan.                          Image via Wikipedia
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said today he will appeal a court ruling that overturned the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, which bans the use of race and gender preferences in college admissions and government hiring and contracting.
Failure to discriminate based on race and gender is a huge no-no in Obama's America.
"MCRI embodies the fundamental premise of what America is all about: equal opportunity under the law," Schuette said in a statement. "Entrance to our great universities must be based upon merit, and I will continue the fight for equality, fairness and rule of law."
A federal appeals court today overturned Proposal 2, saying the voter-approved measure harms minorities and is unconstitutional.
Unconstitutional. Wow. Democracy swept aside by a court ruling. And, since it is based on the "unconstitutionality" of treating people equally, I guess we can say "discrimination is forever".

"Thou shalt discriminate" -- now mandated by the state -- forever.

"I Have And Have Not Committed A Felony"

Seal of the District of Columbia.         Image via Wikipedia
Americans love the word felon. We Canadians don't use it. "Convicted felon". Has an American ring to it. But, hey, how bad can being a felon be? I mean, look at how close the word felon is to fellow.

Anyway, let's take a closer look at this jolly good felon:
Four months after her name was the first to surface as just one of Mr. Gray’s questionable political hires, Ms. Whiting appeared at an oversight hearing before the Government Operations Committee on Monday and claimed she denied her felony conviction on a March 18, 2010, application for the Mendelson job because she thought a 10-year grace period for disclosing prior felonies had expired.
She entered a guilty plea to federal wire-fraud charges on July 3, 2001, according to a federal court transcript - less than nine years before signing and completing the form, which clearly states: “I understand that a false statement on any part of my application may be grounds for not hiring me, or for firing me after I begin work. I understand that the making of a false statement on this form is punishable by criminal penalties.”
Accompanied by her attorney, A. Scott Bolden, Ms. Whiting testified under oath that she disclosed her conviction on a Jan. 13 job application. A document submitted by the Gray administration to the oversight committee indicates a prior felony along with a typed entry that reads: “Will explain in person.”
However, that application is unsigned and undated, despite a bolded section that reads “YOU MUST SIGN THIS APPLICATION.” Mr. Bolden claimed that his client instead signed and dated a residency form attached to the Jan. 13 job application thinking it was sufficient.
Council member David A. Catania noted that Ms. Whiting signed the correct page of her 2010 application for Mr. Mendelson’s office - though she also made a false statement at that time. He shot down her explanation that she “felt both statements were accurate” because she was approaching the 10-year mark from the date of her conviction. He pointed out that the more recent form purports to provide the truthful answer while the older form clearly provided a false statement.
So, I have, and have not committed a felony.

It all depends on what the meaning of "have" is. Sounds like a Democrat to me.
Before her federal conviction in 2001, for which she was sentenced to 22 months in prison, Ms. Whiting was charged multiple times with fraud, forgery, passing bad checks and theft, according to Maryland court records. In 1994, she pleaded guilty to theft and was placed on home detention and probation. In all, courts have ordered her to pay back more than $150,000 in diverted funds over the years, state and federal records show.
I'm betting the mayor who gave this gal a $65K/year political hire gig is also a Democrat.

Seven Hour Cruise Ship Security Check? Yes We Can!

Los Angeles skyline and San Gabriel mountains.                      Image via Wikipedia
But when a group of 2,000 elderly British cruise ship passengers docked at Los Angeles for a short stop-off during a five-star cruise around America it was, in the words of one of them, more like arriving at Guantanamo Bay....
Although they had already been given advance clearance for multiple entries to the country during their trip, all 2,000 passengers were made to go through full security checks in a process which took seven hours to complete.
The fingerprints of both hands were taken as well as retina scans and a detailed check of the passport as well as questioning as to their background.
Passengers claim that the extra checks were carried out in “revenge” for what had been a minor spat over allegedly overzealous security.
They complain that they were “herded like animals” and made to stand for hours in temperatures up to 80F with no food or water or access to lavatories.
Some are said to have passed out in the heat while others were left confused and bewildered.
When one lady asked in desperation whether she could use a bathroom, one immigration official is said to have replied: “Do it over the side, we won’t mind.”
Precisely because US Immigration officials have the authority to act the way they did, the original passengers should not have "acted out".  Just keep your thoughts to yourself. Meanwhile, California's illegal immigrants, you know, the ones that don't bother to stand in line for seven hours, get most-favored-alien treatment.

I thought the Obama era was going to be all hopey-changy. What went wrong?

Target Targets Canada

Logo of Target, US-based retail chain                                          Image via Wikipedia
Target is coming to Canada.

The Ball Bounces approves!

Target is upscale from Wal Mart but still has low prices while emphasizing style. Very pleasant shopping experience.
Target Corp. has announced the first 105 locations that it will take over from Zellers when it begins opening stores in Canada in early 2013.
“This is just the first wave,” Target Canada president Tony Fisher told media in a presentation in Chicago Thursday.
The list includes properties in 10 provinces; 13 in Alberta, 15 in British Columbia, five in Manitoba, one in New Brunswick, two in Newfoundland and Labrador, two in Nova Scotia, 45 in Ontario, one in PEI, 19 in Quebec, and two in Saskatchewan.
Hey, this means the Zellars store in Charlottetown (PEI) is going to become a Target. Good news for Islanders! We're also getting one here in North York (Toronto) at the Centerpoint Mall. That's good!

Are you getting one? Check it out!

Israel/USA/Palestine: It's Time To Give The Land Back

Mexican Cession in Mexican View                       Image via Wikipedia
Israel should go along with the Great One™ and accede to the Nobel Peace Prize winner 's prescription for world peace: roll back the borders of Israel to 1967 (more or less).

1967 was when, you know, the surrounding Arab states ganged up on Israel and Israel beat them back fair-and-square. In six days. Now Obama wants Israel to just hand the land back.

And I think Israel should go along with the US. But, there has to be some concessions on the part of the US. before Israel makes such a courageous and counter-intuitive move. Israel should agree to roll back its borders to 1967 when the US agrees to roll back its border with Mexico.
The constant conflicts in the Texas region in the mid 19th century eventually led to the Mexican-American War, which began in 1846 and ended in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Due to the treaty Mexico lost more than 960,000 square miles (about 2,500,000 km²) of land, 55%[7] of its national territory, including what is today California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma in addition, all disputes over Texas and the disputed territory between Rio Grande and Rio Nueces were abandoned. Five years later the Gadsden Purchase completed the creation of the current United States – Mexico border. These purchases left approximately 300,000 people living in the once disputed lands, many of whom were Mexican nationals. Following the establishment of the current border a number of towns sprang up along this boundary and many of the Mexican citizens were given free land in the northern regions of Mexico in exchange for returning and repopulating the area.[8] -- Wiki
Such an act would be a demonstration of good faith on the part of the United States and would win the admiration of the world. Give conquered lands back? Sure. You go first.

And that's the way the Ball bounces.

Oh, yes. And Canada wants Fort Blunder back. There can never be peace where there's permanent occupation.

Where's Michael "Diaper-Baby" Savage When You Need Him?

Michael Savage 2002                                       Image via Wikipedia
Conservative talk show host Michael Savage likes to talk about "red diaper doper babies". It's a put-down. Here's a definition from the Urban Dictionary: "The children of leftist intellectual baby boomers, raised from birth on Marxism and a drug tolerant environment, and now in places of political and intellectual influence."

Well, where's Michael when you need him? Here's a story about a 30-year old "adult baby" living on US government assistance.

Why does a mean-spirited Republican always have to get in the way of someone's government-subsidized fun? Republican Senator Tom Coburn has to spoil the party by saying it’s not clear why he and the woman who acts as his "mother" are collecting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits instead of working. Did I mention he was mean-spirited? And Republican?

The man in question threatened suicide when it was suggested his Social Security payments be taken away. You can file his response under, "I'm entitled to my entitlements!". Of course, he states it more elegantly:
“You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don’t care,” the California man said. “I have no problem killing myself. Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag.”
Waaaa! Waaaa! Waaaaaa! You know what? I think he's bluffing.

Food Stamps: Because A Million Dollars Isn't What It Used To be

Used to be you made or won a million dollars and you were considered rich. Not anymore.

A US man is still on taxpayer-funded food stamps after winning two million dollars in a lottery.

Mean-spirited Republican Senator Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge retorted, "What a waste of taxpayer money." Did I mention he's mean-spirited? And a Republican?

The winner reported his windfall to state DHS officials. They told him he could keep using the Bridge Card issued to him to buy groceries, as long as his gross income stayed below a certain level -- lottery winnings aren't considered in this calculation.

Money quote: "If you're going to try to make me feel bad, you're not going to do it,".

US Homeland Security: Canadian Border A Bigger Threat Than, You Know, The Other One

ARIZONA BORDERS AND CITIZEN SAFETY...Image by roberthuffstutter via Flickr
The U.S. border with Canada, even though it sees far fewer detentions and arrests every year, is a "more significant threat" to American security than the Mexican border, a senior Homeland Security official said Tuesday.
"In terms of the terrorist threat, it's commonly accepted that [it's] the more significant threat, because of... people who can enter Canada then and come across our bridges into the United States," Alan Bersin, head of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, told a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing in Washington.
Bersin was responding to questioning from Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican who demanded to know why the southern U.S. border, with about 445,000 arrests and detentions annually, isn't considered far more sensitive than the northern boundary, which saw 6,000 arrests and detentions last year.
Let's do the cultural equivalence math on this one. Four hundred and forty-five thousand minus six thousand, yikes! This means 439,000 persons must have slipped through the Canadian border into the US undetected!!!

Meanwhile, south of the US border...
Police on Tuesday detained 513 undocumented migrants from Latin America and Asia who were crammed into two trucks bound for the United States, prosecutors in southeast Mexico said.
The migrants, from Latin America, Japan, China, India and Nepal, "were traveling in inhuman conditions" in the southeastern state of Chiapas, near the Guatemalan border, the local attorney general's office said in a statement.
Yikes again!! This means there were 513 Timbit-popping Canadians who entered the US illegally and were not caught. Is the northern border porous or what?!

Message to US Border Patrol (Canadian Edition): Visit the local Dunkin' Donuts and keep an eye out for people who look vaguely uncomfortable and maybe even a little (tim)bit guilty. If you see them poppin' a Timbit from their stash, you know you got one!

In-N-Out Burger: A Beautiful Thing

In-n-Out Burger SignImage by Aaron Friedman via Flickr
In-N-Out Burger comes to Texas.

The Ball Bounces approves.

It's a great chain. Clean, attractive. Fresh-tasting burgers with lots of lettuce and onions, and ultra-fresh french fries. First tried 'em in California. A southern Cal chain, I was working in northern California when they first arrived. I asked my wife, joking (we're in Toronto), earlier this evening, "feel like an In-N-Out Burger?".

We get 'em when we're in Phoenix.

People Laughed Out Loud As The Tarp Was Pulled Away...

Sculpture Monument to the War of 1812 (2008) b...                       Image via Wikipedia
This should help with Toronto's efforts to win the hearts and wallets of American tourists.

The Douglas Coupland monument, unveiled yesterday at the corner of Fleet and Bathurst in Toronto features a vanquished American from the Battle of 1812. All playfully done of course!

Hey, we just stuck it to the Americans, and all for a measly $500,000. And the subtlety of it is breath-taking -- can't imagine what the laughing was about. Or, maybe I just don't "get" it.  As one commenter said, "hey, I didn't know they had snowboards back then" (look again).

Why not a monument that reflects the under-appreciated fact that Canada has lived safely and securely for a generation because we  live in the protective shadow of the US and its military might.

Why not commemorate that?
