Toronto Star: "It Was Iggy's Fault"

Michael Ignatieff, Canadian politician                                        Image via Wikipedia
The Toronto Star is bailing on Michael Ignatieff. He's the proverbial scapegoat. The Liberals' collapse had nothing, noth-ing, to do with the Liberal Party, its policies, its candidates, or its policies. The Star has analyzed the collapse and here's their conclusion: it was the Liberal leader's fault.
Extensive Star interviews with campaign insiders and politicians show a large slice of the loss must be attributed to the arrogance of the Liberal leader. In the end, a central Conservative criticism against Ignatieff — that he was arrogant — turned out to be true.
Pigs fly and hell freezes over -- the Star uses Conservative rhetoric to advance their argument!

The Star's analysis strikes me as simplistic. The Liberal leader surely didn't decide on his own to force this election. It was the Liberals as a pack, lusting as they do for power.

A much better read is the Macleans serialization by Paul Wells. I blogged on it earlier.

And that's the way the Ball bounces.

Have You Seen Macleans' Serialization of the 2011 Election?

Michael Ignatieff, leader of the Liberal Party...                    Image via Wikipedia
Macleans' serialization of the 2011 election is extremely well-written and utterly fascinating. Excerpts:
Michael Ignatieff’s gaze drifted upward, past the ceiling of the foyer of the House of Commons and, as it seemed, toward heaven....
His formidable eyebrows arched up, then pressed downward and together, like twin dolphins at yoga class. He rambled on a bit more.
You'll enjoy it. Only problem is, you have wait a day for each new excerpt. Days one, two, and three are available for your eyeballs. Warning: reading it may cause your formidable eyebrows to arch up like the wafting smell of stale coffee at an all-night diner (pardon my attempts at noir-fiction).

Elections Canada: Are All Canadians Equal?

OAKLAND, CA - JANUARY 08: The Wal-Mart logo i...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Apparently not.

Some democracy-challenged Canadians apparently require "special ballots".
The report quotes an Elections Canada official, who said the university has held special ballots before without issue. Special ballots are different than advance polls. They are set up as a way of facilitating the voting process for groups that are often under-represented on voting day, such as students and aboriginals.
Are students and aboriginals intrinsically less able to exercise their right to vote than others? Or just too  indifferent or lazy?

How about snowbirds? We're (sensibly) down in the USA; we're under-represented -- and we're as indifferent and lazy as the best of 'em. Shouldn't we have equal access to "special ballots"? Elections Canada could set them up in local Wal Marts for us. Better still, I would like one set up for me at the local Julio G's Mexican Restaurant at Tatum and Cactus in Phoenix, where we go for double-stamp Monday -- otherwise, I will be under-represented on voting day, and that will be a loss for Canadian democracy.

Do you think that could that be arranged, Elections Canada?  If you set up between 11 am. and 1 pm., you'll catch me, and Julio's will probably spring for chips and salsa.

Ignatieff is making a big deal about a Conservative objection to special ballots and is equating special-access to special balloting with Canadian "democracy".

Sounds more like the promotion of democratic inequality based on selective state-sponsored group-identity politics to me.

The lazy and indifferent should be equal across Canada, from sea-to-glorious-sea, from coast-to-coast-to-coast-to, er border, and even down into the US.

And that's the way the lazy and indifferent Canadian Ball bounces.

The Absent Mr. Iggs

Michael Ignatieff on the Campaign Trail      Image by davehuehn via Flickr
"Anyone else notice Iffy's hasty exit at the end of the post debate news conference (on CBC The National)? A reporter attempted to ask him about Layton's question regarding his voting frequency and he ran off the stage into Zzuzzanna'z arms. Imagine if Harper had done that." -- Anon, in the Ball Bounces Comments.
Iggy Ignatieff: first absent from Canada; now absent from Parliament. Reasonable question: if elected PM, will you show up?

And that's the way the Ball bounces.

Photo: unretouched photo of Iggy absent from Parliament on the campaign trail(*). Unretouched? OK, it was retouched by the Liberal Party of Canada's Dept. of Spin, Gloss and Photoshopping to remove an errant pinky.

(*)Update: The BallBounces welcomes davehuehn, the person who snapped the splendid Ignatieff photo. His unretouched comments weighing in on my (mis)use of his photo for satirical purposes, below.

New BallBounces Poll: Conservatives Fail To Eavesdrop; Election Imminent

Michael Ignatieff                      Image via Wikipedia
Here's the latest poll question: Michael Ignatieff says, "This is a government that doesn't seem to be listening to what Canadian families are telling us." Do you agree with Michael that the Conservatives should eavesdrop on the Liberals?

Vote early, and vote often!

Now Ignatieff Steps In It

Michael Ignatieff at the Lakeshore Santa Claus...                                 Image via Wikipedia
Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff said: “Let’s not play word games with this stuff . . . There’s no such thing as an honour killing, there’s only killing and it’s a crime everywhere,” he said.
No such thing as an honour killing? Really? Tell that to Pakistan.  Or to the Muslim guy I spent an evening with in Bombay who said if his daughter fooled around he would have to kill her to protect his family's honour. (This while drinking beer in his hotel room where no-one could see him).  Let's see: it wouldn't be a crime of passion (France); it wouldn't be a "hate crime" (Canada); it wouldn't be a crime of murderous rage, or killing during a criminal act; so it must be an... honour killing.

Presumably the next time a pederast or homosexual or Christian is killed in Canada for being a pederast or homosexual or Christian we will hear this quote from the Liberal leader: “Let’s not play word games with this stuff . . . There’s no such thing as a hate crime, there’s only killing and it’s a crime everywhere”.

I think the Liberals are just "making it up" as they go along.

And that's the way the I'm-glad-I'm-not-a-Liberal Ball bounces.

Snowman Murdered: Should the Perp Be Iced?

BERLIN - JANUARY 23: A snowman is pictured wit...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
A snowman was murdered in cold, er, ice by an uncaring Illinois bus driver. The snowman was standing on the road, minding his own business, not doing much, when the bus driver plowed right into him.

What makes this act especially egregious is the fact that the snowman, unlike humans who are the product of nothing more than mindless, uncaring processes, was loved. Unlike us, he was desired. He existed in the mind of his creators before he was brought into being. And, if three round lumps of snow atop each other mean anything, he was (gasp) intelligently designed.

Arguably, if love and creation confer value on their objects, he has more value than a human being.

What makes us so special that we have rights and snowmen don't?  Aren't we all just part of seamless nature, the dance of molecules in motion? As a creation of evolution's finest mindless outcome, doesn't the snowman himself stand atop the evolutionary mount? Where's Ignatieff and the party of the Charter and inclusion and equality rights when we need him? If this had been a cross-dressing snowman, would it have made any difference?

The perp has either been fired or quit his job.  But is this enough? Should be iced?

And that's the way the Ball bounces.

A further thought: The perp should argue he was engaged in an existential act of performance art; not only would he be lauded by the contemporary art world for his brave statement, he could probably get some federal grant monies.
