Quote of the Day: Prima Facie Evidence of Design

Edward Harrison - Cosmologist

“The fine tuning of the universe provides prima facie evidence of deistic design. Take your choice: blind chance that requires multitudes of universes or design that requires only one. Many scientists, when they admit their views, incline toward the teleological or design argument.” (h/t y-origins.com)

British-born Cosmologist Edward R. (Ted) Harrison, was emeritus Distinguished University Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was known for his work on the growth of fluctuations in the expanding universe and his books on cosmology, which include "Cosmology: The Science of the Universe", Darkness at Night, and Masks of the Universe.

Haven't we been through this...

The probability that it is right by chance is 100% because it already happened...

Come to the policy convention, and we can hash this out over a beverage.

...or as you really meant 'The probability that it is right by chance is 100% because' chance is the only possibility.

You're both wrong.

Probability does not apply to past events. It does not matter how small the probability that the universe evolved as it did by chance was. If that's what happened, that's what happened.

It's like saying, the probability of Joe being hit by lightning was so small, he could not possibly have been hit by lightning - *after* Joe was hit by lightning.

Probability is not evidence, either way.

Typical Philosopher.. argument perfect .. nothing answered.

"... nothing intellectually compelling or challenging.. bald assertions coupled to superstition... woefully pathetic"
