Memo to Federal Gov't: I Want My Money Back

"Federal civil servants — who weren’t laid off — paid ‘staggering’ $1.2B in severance"

The government also is projecting it will spend at least another $850-million in the current 2012-13 fiscal year on accumulated severance payouts (including for resignation and retirement) owed to federal employees as per collective agreements signed by successive governments over several years.
Gutless federal governments meet greedy public sector unions.

An abuse of tax-payers.

De-unionize public sector workers now.

Where's Margaret Thatcher when we need her?

Why does a unionized public service have to do with signed collective agreements when the government legislates them back to work and imposes their conditions?

Well... The 1.2 billion is spread out between 91613 people. That's about 13000 per severance package on average (at least according to my calculations... which have been off before).

And they were entitled to a severance package because...?

They were entitled to such severance as per their contracts. There may be a problem with the contracts. I don't want tot argue the point. I just wanted to note how many people received the 1.2 billion. Because I'm obnoxious that way.
