TJI (this just in): PM Harper says that the US is Canada's best friend

If the US is our best friend -- and if not the US, then who? -- Canadians aren't a very friendly bunch. There's no country on earth we like to dislike more than the US.

We smugly rest in our sense of moral superiority, which we only have the luxury of having in the first place because we have a powerful neighbour to the south that would defend us if attacked.

We let the US do the heavy-lifting; we let it make both the right moves and the wrong ones, and are content to sit back and throw our self-righteous made-in-Canada darts in Uncle Sam's face.

It's easy to sit back and criticize.

But, without the US countering Islamic terrorism and other threats, the world would be a far more unstable and dangerous place. Who would protect us? Ourselves? That would mean having a fighting military, something that is now considered "uncanadian". England? Got its own problems. France? Can you really trust a country whose money "expires"? (I once got stuck with some obsolete francs that even a French bank would not exchange.) Or one that was on Saddam Hussein's side up to the outbreak of the Iraqi war?

I say, thank God for the USA.

Some Canadians seem to be virulently anti-American. It is impossible to even hold a rational discussion.

I don't know the reason for certain, but I do have some opinions.

Obviously, we in Canada have slightly different interests to the United States but overall we are quite closely aligned. This alone cannot be a cause to be so anti-US or more specifically anti George Bush.

As a Canadian who is favourably disposed towards the US, I find it appalling that the most anti-American opinions seem to come from the US media. Perhaps this is where some Canadians get their opinions.

The US citizens seem to be more attuned to their media. They are aware of the biases and are more selective which makes them much more independent in their judgments. The last US presidential election was a shock to the chattering classes which has made them very upset. They could not believe that so many of their fellow citizens could be so uninformed as to ignore the eastern media.

The media in Canada is even worse in its arrogance. In Canada, until recently, we seemed to just accept what we were fed. It is still the case for many people but I do have hopes that we are changing. BLOGS are becoming more important in the dissemination of information and we are becoming more critical.

Attempts to conceal information in Canada have been thwarted by the BLOGS in the US. The Canadian journalists cave in because they have been co-opted. They are either afraid of legal sanctions (which would be bitterly fought in the US) or even worse the cut off of access to various politicians.

Now, however, many people bypass the reporters and go to the various BLOGS that cover the points of interest. Maybe things are going to change here.
