Obama's Bayonet Jab: Gotcha or Gaffe?

I'm surprised that the media is touting Obama's bayonets and horses line as a high-point "gotcha" rather than a gaffe.

Romney's point was "this is the number of ships that the Navy -- not me -- says it needs to do its job".

Obama's response stuck me as a huge swipe against America's navy and the men and women who serve in it. Here was their commander-in-chief saying in effect, "you're obsolete". That should boost morale.

As another commentator noted, if ships are so obsolete, why is China building them like crazy?

I should also point out that for decades the US has used its ships to keep the shipping lanes of the world free and open to trade. It has done this without fanfare, and without cost to the rest of the world. When it comes to the US or the UN to get the job done, who ya gonna call?

Each and every one of us has reason to be thankful for the US Navy -- it has helped secure whatever prosperity each of us currently enjoys.

A strong navy or remaindered reset buttons -- America's choice.

How do you critique such profound military ignorance - in Obama's world, its the drone "stupid". The US military under Obama will be the first to drop the "bowie knife" from its arsenal of weapons. Unbelievable.

The idea that the navy is becoming less relevant is clearly absurd. This one's going to bite Obama on the arse.

The reason is that the media party is still stuck on binders as though that was and is really an important issue. No wonder they continue losing credibility and readership.

If a navy is so unimportant, why is China building up its navy so much and not just a Russian aircraft carrier that they are refurbishing. I wish Romney had brought this up.

Otherwise he did a great job. I thought he looked the most presidential this time around of all the debates.

And of course who (besides Obama) could have forgotten the US SoF troops riding horses to link up with the Northern Alliance forces in Afghanistan in 2002?
