Desmond Tutu calls oilsands ‘filth’ created by greed in Fort McMurray speech

He was probably in a bad mood after paddling all the way over to Canada.

Thank God for oil and gas.

Just a few dumb questions:

How much was Tutu paid to make the trip?
How much was Tutu paid to say nasty things about something he clearly knows nothing?
Why should anyone care what some ill informed clergyman has to say about industrial development?

Most of the people who work in the oilsands believe they are cleaning up God's oil spill. That greasy stuff has been leaking into rivers, streams and lakes since the dawn of creation and poses an environmental risk to anyone down stream!

"Cleaning up God's oil spill" -- I love it!

Canada must be unique among nations, in that any foreign political functionary can arrive to trash the country, and the national media will gladly provide a pulpit.
If the person happens to be an obscure UN apparatchik, or an African politico, so much the better. The fact that most of these people come from countries with a host of social, and economic conditions that would dwarf Canada's matters not.
Most ironic is that the same people who would be apoplectic if a Cristian minister ventured opinions on Canadian policy, gladly accept the views of an Anglican bishop.

"Most ironic is that…

Good point.

So why doesn't tutu go to Cuba and trash the oil development there and the fact that Canadian oil companies are working there producing oil with the blessing of the Canadian government? And while tutu is in Cuba trashing oil why doesn't he trash the fact that Canada ignores an embargo against Cuba and allows Canadians to travel there spending over 3 billion dollars a years supporting a communist regime? And when he's there he can trash the fact that Canada provides even more foreign aid to the communists regime were the average Cuban earns 1 dollar a day?

Let's put it this way Richard, Tutu didn't win the Nobel Prize for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I think what most bothers me about Tutu is not what he said, why he said it or where he said it but rather that he wears a roman collar and a large wooden cross as he is saying it. His attempt at associating the Gospel if Jesus Christ with his cause de jour profanes the Gospel.

Maybe it is just me but I refuse to wear a gown or a roman collar or wear a when I preach lest someone take my words as the words of authority instead of the words of inspiration, wonderment and searching. If the hearer can't hear the truth of my words, my words are in vain because I have no interest in forcing conformity with symbols of authority.
