This is the best that one of the greatest minds on the planet has to offer? Maybe it gets better if you read everything he said; but this is incoherent on about every possible level.
For starters:
* If there is really and truly nothing, then where does gravity come from?
* Why do natural laws exist at all, and why are the natural laws what they are as opposed to some other thing? Why, e.g., is there gravity in the first place, and why does it have the strength it has as opposed to some other strength?
* The terms spontaneous creation and reason are incoherent when used together. If creation was spontaneous, then there may be a cause for the universe but there is no reason for it; reason becomes an incoherent concept and an absurd quest. Spontaneous generation of the universe may explain how we came to exist, but not why -- because there can be no why under this scenario.
Hawking's comment appears to be nothing more than atheist dogma -- "from nothing, by nothing, for nothing" -- in pseudo-scientific drag.

I love it when smart people try to understand and explain the universe...its like watching an octopus fold up a lawn chair. If he was as smart as they say he is he'd at least end with.."but I could be wrong". billg

It takes an exceptional degree of self-delusion to think that you are providing any intellectual surprises to Hawking on these matters; however, I suppose it's no more than is required to believe in supernatural imaginary friends.
Yes, Mr Hawking, but who made gravity? What existed before the Big Bang and who made it bang. Have there been many big bangs? does the universe expand and contract. Why? how? the finger of God?
My inadequate brain cannot comprehend the idea of unending space. If I even have fleeting doubts about the existence of God I merely look up and think about the universe.

i want to see this something from nothing. hell, it just might catch on. no shortage of food, fuel or any of the necessities of life. wow, something from nothing. you would almost have to be God or something.
It's absurd to postulate that the universe spontaneously created itself, just as it's absurd to postulate that the universe always existed.
There simply has to be a god...who either spontaneously created itself or always existed.
