Breaking: Liberal President Calls For Charter of Rights 3.0

Leader of the Official Opposition (Canada)                     Image via Wikipedia
"Canada should entrench economic rights such as the right to timely heath care and a decent education into an updated Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the president of the Liberal Party of Canada said on Thursday."

First off, Canadians have learned we don't need an elected Parliament to produce a trendy, edgy, in-your-face update to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. For that we have unelected, trendy, edgy, in-your-face courts: ho ho! hey hey hey! update, away! In a move that explicitly over-ruled the express will of Parliament, the leftist-appointed courts of our fair land pencilled-in, nay, etched in stone, rights based on sexual orientation. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Call it Charter 2.0. It was like Moses going up the mountain to get a second copy of the ten commandments and coming back down with eleven! Kind of abrogating to himself a role that previously resided Higher Up, but, hey, it's a great gig if you can get away with it!

Now the President of the Liberal Party of Canada, in an act whose timing can only smack of a desperate move to regain some kind of national relevance for the Liberal Party, wants to add-in timely health care and a decent education.

I'm going to wait and let George Jonas (and, one would hope, Rex Murphy) tell us why this is an Incredibly Bad Idea. But, I will offer one reason. If I have the presumptive right to timely health care and a decent education, then, even if I'm the worst layabout in Canada, someone, i.e., "you" has the positive obligation to provide it to me. This makes you, in effect, a slave of me and my rights.

And that is why this, ultimately, would turn into an enslavement and not a freedom.

And that's the way the Ball bounces.

PS. Betcha George Jonas goes nuts on this.

How true! Actually I suggest we only need one right; the right to be free from the tyranny of government, judicial activists and special interest groups. For those who place such devout faith in Trudeau's charter, it is worth recalling that pre-Nazi Germany had all the standard rights on paper but it did nothing to protect the people targeted. We also actually enjoyed more rights and freedom prior to Trudeau's charter.

What brilliance!!! What vision!!!
A pronouncement from the lofty podium of a failing and soon to disappear Liberal Party of Toronto. Apps should concentrate on developing the grassroots of his party - get his fundraising up to modern standards - still has sad sack leadership candidates that are in debt - years after the fact - therefore in contempt of Election Canada rules - recruited Ignatieff to leave a cushy job as professor to venture to the Great White North - lost Official Opposition status and so on and so on. Manage the party and leave the deep thinking to the thinkers - if there are any left in the Liberal ranks. Cheers.

just listening to Aps gives the impression that he's completly delusional; apart from this silly idea, his last gem was his no more middle aged white males stupidity; how can a person in such a position be so out to lunch and out of touch?

I'm sure that sociopathic communist has a central plan for making these rights work.
